The third installment in a trilogy of theatrical spectacles from Argentina that first arrived off Broadway in 1998 with a show called "De La Guarda" is called "Wayra." Time Out New York's David Cote filed the following report for NY1.
When "De La Guarda" first swung Off Broadway 16 years ago, it was the only immersive game in town. Even when mastermind Diqui James unveiled a sequel, "Fuerza Bruta," there was no "Sleep No More" or "Queen of the Night" thrilling audiences with 360-degree experiences. Now comes the third part of the trilogy: "Fuerza Bruta: Wayra." Luckily, it’s the same formula, and it's an ecstatic good time.
As a palate cleanser for theatergoers tired of living rooms and family secrets, Wayra is a bona fide sensory thrill ride. Immersive theater may be more common now, but no one blasts through boundaries like this troop.
As usual, James' episodic spectacle, with an eclectic score that switches from techno to drum-heavy world beat, is pleasantly overwhelming. The crowd enters through the cavernous Daryl Roth Theatre, where we are covered in colored lights and encouraged to shake our booty to the ambient music. The program includes live music, flying stunts, action sequences involving a running everyman who gets shot and, most enchanting of all, a return of the clear-bottomed pool that descends to within touching distance, allowing us to gaze at mysterious women swimming. Eventually, a huge grid-covered balloon is stretched over the audience, with performers peering down at us through holes. As you expect, they swing down on cables and playfully abduct audience members.
What it all means is anyone's guess. Are these gods visiting us? Angels? Aliens? Perhaps it's best to switch off the analytic part of your brain and just enjoy the physical sensations: the beat, the heat and the rush of air.
