A lockout is looming at the Metropolitan Opera House.

The two sides met Monday in an effort to renew the contracts of 15 union groups.

Union officials say contract talks show little hope for a deal.

In a letter sent to the union members last week, Peter Gelb, the company's general manager warned that unless they reach a deal this week everyone should prepare for a lockout starting Friday.

Union members staged a rally outside Lincoln Center last Thursday.

Opening night is September 22, but a work stoppage would delay the company's preseason rehearsal schedule.
