1776...British warships bombard Kip's Bay, off of present-day East 34th Street. The Redcoats' assault is a success, and New York temporarily becomes the Tory capital of America.

1953...Manhattan Borough President Robert Wagner Jr. defeats Mayor Vincent Impelleteri in the Democratic mayoral primary. Wagner goes on to win his first of three terms as mayor.
