1983...A two-run home run by the Kansas City Royals George Brett is disallowed after the Yankees claim there was too much pine tar on Brett's bat. The decision is reversed days later and the Yanks lose the game.

1967...Two people are killed in a series of anti-police riots in East Harlem. The melee began the previous day after an off-day officer fatally shot a suspect who was trying to avoid arrest. Thirty-six people are also injured in the two-day clash.

2011...Hundreds of same-sex marriages are performed throughout the city as the New York State marriage equality law goes into effect.
