On this date in...

1892... The cornerstone is laid for Grant's Tomb near Riverside Drive and 122nd Street in Manhattan. The monument is dedicated exactly five years later, on the 75th anniversary of Grant's birth. Grant is the only U.S. president to be buried in New York City.

1947... An ailing Babe Ruth bids farewell to his fans during a ceremony at Yankee Stadium. He dies the following year.

2000... In an announcement that shocks the city, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani reveals that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The mayor refuses to speculate on how his condition will affect his campaign for the U.S. Senate – but he bows out of the race three weeks later, saying that his health must be his first priority.
