The latest New Yorkers of the Week use social media to unite pit bulls with caring owners. NY1’s Jessica Abo filed the following report.

Dave Goldstein and his wife Brooke Slater love pit bulls, so about two years ago they started a special website to help their favorite breed.

“Bruised Not Broken is a social media site where people can come to learn about pit bulls, read articles, facts, information, stories pertaining to pit bulls, and mostly where pit bulls are up for adoption in the Manhattan shelters,” says Slater.

Every night they get a list produced by Animal Care and Control of New York City with pictures and bios of dogs in need of immediate placement. They then post some of the cases to their Bruised Not Broken Facebook page, which has close to 140,000 followers.

Austin Clyburn spotted Maximus on the site hours before he was going to be euthanized.

“His mug shot, if you wanna call it, was him sitting in someone's arms with a smile across his face like not a care in the world, and he didn't know what was going to happen to him, so I kind of said to myself I have to have him, and I adopted him a year ago,” says Clyburn.

Since Dave and Brooke started Bruised Not Broken, they've helped save close to 300 pit bulls, and when they're not running their social media sites, they're fundraising and out in the community helping the breed.

“We have a therapy animal of our own. He's a deaf pit bull who we've trained and we always welcome the opportunity to work with partner organizations to spread the word about the breed so they can see it's not just what they see on the news,” says Goldstein.

Shelter volunteer Carol Rothschild says there are no words to describe what Brooke and Dave have done for the pit bull community.

“I think what they're doing in terms of creating pit bull awareness, helping animals get adopted, giving them a voice where they may otherwise not have that voice, is incredible,” says Rothschild.

“Dave and Brooke are phenomenal people who continue day in and day out to amaze me with the things that they do and the way they help dogs,” says Clyburn.

For helping a breed in need, Dave Goldstein and Brooke Slater are the latest New Yorkers of the Week.
