A popular dance became a pain in the back for one Queens woman who reached out to NY1 For You for help. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following report. Joan Garrison thought learning to ballroom dance would be a fun way to get exercise until she started lessons and her body told her otherwise.
"My doctor said, 'I really don't recommend that you continue this,'" says Garrison.
So after only two of 30 one-on-one lessons at Manhattan Ballroom Dance Studio, Garrison had to stop dancing because of a bad back.
With her doctor's letter in hand, Garrison asked the owner of the dance studio for a refund for the remaining 28 lessons from the total package, which cost her $2,250.
She says the owner agreed to refund her money but then she did not hear from him for several months. That is when Garrison said she notified the owner that she was taking him to Small Claims Court.
"He came back to me within hours and he goes, 'There's no need for that,'" says Garrison.
After which Garrison says he emailed her, proposing a payment plan. She says she accepted happily but when the time came to get paid, Garrison said she received nothing, which put her back at Small Claims Court.
"With Small Claims Court the onus is still on me. I still have to get paid which is not happening.
So Garrison, whose health is worsening now that she is battling breast cancer, called NY1 For You.
NY1 contacted the owner of Manhattan Ballroom Dance Studio, and although he did not comment on the story, he did finally refund Garrison all her money in cash.
It is the end to an exhausting dance for Garrison.
