On this date in...

1850...Revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, exiled from his native Italy, arrives in Staten Island where he finds work as a candlemaker. Four years later he returns to his homeland where he again takes up arms and becomes a national hero.

1923...The Museum of the City of New York opens in Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side. The museum moves in 1932 to its current home at Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street, while Gracie Mansion becomes the mayor's official residence in 1942.

1948...Idlewild Airport is dedicated by President Harry S Truman. The airport is renamed for slain President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

1977...After a year-long reign of terror, "Son of Sam" David Berkowitz kills his last victim, Stacey Moskowitz, in Brooklyn. Berkowitz is captured ten days later and is sentenced to life in prison.
