Second Summer Heat Wave Bakes City

The city entered its second heat wave of the summer on Sunday, and New Yorkers sought relief from the over-90-degree temperature at city beaches, parks and pools.
At 1 p.m. Sunday, the thermostat reached 93 degrees at Central Park, marking the third consecutive day the city had temperatures over 90 degrees.
Cooling centers were open across the five boroughs and New Yorkers with city-approved spray caps could open fire hydrants.
City beaches were open until 6 p.m. and beachgoers could only swim where lifeguards are on duty.
Outdoor city pools were open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Swimmers at the pool in Red Hook, Brooklyn said people of all ages could have fun in the water.
"It's accessible, it's easy to get to, it's refreshing. You get to be active and exercise, but you're not overheating yourself," said one pool-goer.
"Everybody in the pool is friendly. Everybody is nice. This is a great pool to come to," said another. "I advise everybody to come here. It's beautiful. Yeah, it's nice and cool today."
"Where else are you going to keep cool? Not the East River," said a third.
New Yorkers were also reminded to drink plenty of water and use sunscreen.
